Who is Morningstar — and why does it matter for your investments?

If you’ve sat down with us to talk about your investment portfolio, you’ve probably heard us mention Morningstar. But unless you work in finance, you may not know much about them — or why we place so much value on their involvement in how we construct your portfolio.

Here’s a plain-English introduction.

What is Morningstar?

Morningstar is one of the world’s largest and most respected independent investment research organisations. Founded in Chicago in 1984, they now operate in more than 27 countries and provide research, data and investment management services covering tens of thousands of managed funds, shares and other investment products globally.

In Australia, Morningstar is best known for their fund ratings — the star ratings you sometimes see on managed fund fact sheets. But their work goes far deeper than ratings. They employ dedicated investment analysts, economists and portfolio construction specialists who spend their careers researching markets, evaluating fund managers and building investment frameworks.

What does Morningstar actually do for your portfolio?

At Indigo Financial Planning, we don’t just read Morningstar’s research — we work with them directly. Our portfolio construction is developed in personal consultation with Morningstar’s investment team, across all phases of the financial lifecycle.

That means the portfolios we recommend for our clients aren’t built on gut feel or generic model portfolios downloaded from a platform. They’re constructed using Morningstar’s analytical frameworks, manager research and asset allocation methodology — the same intellectual infrastructure used by some of Australia’s largest superannuation funds and institutions.

For clients in accumulation — still building wealth — this means portfolios designed to grow efficiently over time with appropriate risk management. For clients transitioning to or already in retirement, it means portfolios structured to generate reliable income while protecting capital over the long term.

Why does this matter for a regional client?

One of the advantages of working with a boutique practice like Indigo Financial Planning is that you get a personal relationship with your adviser. One of the potential concerns is whether a smaller practice has access to the same quality of investment research and thinking as a large city firm.

Our relationship with Morningstar addresses that directly. The portfolio construction methodology behind your investments is informed by one of the most rigorous research organisations in the world — regardless of whether you’re in Merimbula, Sydney or Melbourne.

What are Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs)?

We implement many of our portfolios through Separately Managed Accounts — or SMAs — on platforms like HUB24 and IconiQ. An SMA allows you to own the underlying investments directly in your own name, rather than through a pooled fund structure.

This means greater transparency, better tax efficiency, and the ability to see exactly what you own at any point. Morningstar manages several of the SMA portfolios we use, which means their investment team is actively overseeing the portfolio on an ongoing basis — not just at the time we set it up.

The bottom line

Good investment advice isn’t just about picking the right fund. It’s about having a coherent, evidence-based framework for how your money is allocated — one that’s appropriate for your stage of life, your risk profile, and your goals.

Our partnership with Morningstar means that framework is built on decades of research and continually refined by people who do nothing else but think about investment portfolios. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to for every client, regardless of the size of their portfolio.
